Cottage Building Workshops

- To Be Announced -

Clay hand building workshops featuring the unique skills and systems developed by prize winning ceramic artist Jan Richardson of Windy Meadows Pottery  will be presented at Jan's Washington  and Florida studios and at various clay centers around the country.

Participants in the workshops will create wonderful stoneware cottages using basic templates designed by Jan  and will be similar to the houses in the Windy Meadows Pottery Collection.  Everyone will have the freedom to choose textures, colors and other embellishments so that the end result will be a clay house  that will be uniquely the artists own creative expression.  Most of the colors and textures may be seen on www.windymeadowspottery.com in COLLECTIONS  on the 'Main Gallery'  and 'Retired Pieces'.  As a rule one day workshops feature a cottage similar to the Country Lane Collection and two day workshops feature a house similar to the Private Collection.

The early part of the workshop will find the participants  deciding about colors, textures and some special touches and then cutting the house out.   As the house progresses windows will be cut and doors cut and trimmed.   Then the parts will be put together  and more embellishment such as flowers and extra trim are added . That is really the most fun part as you can really use your imagination.   At the end of the workshop, the house will be dried, bisque fired, glazed and final fired  and then sent to the excited artist.  Advanced students from prior workshops may make arrangements to make independent projects.

Jan built her first clay farm house in 1977 on her kitchen table at Windy Meadows Farm in Knoxville,Maryland. With the help of family, friends and hardworking assistants, the pottery grew and became a favorite at Art Festivals and Galleries. Countless magazines, newspaper articles and television spots featured Windy Meadows Pottery. Over the next 30 years , collectors acquired thousands of cottages in the Village, Hometown, Country Lane and Private (House, Cottage and Nostalgia) Collection as well as many one of a kind Mansions and more abstract Garden Sculptures. Jan moved to the Washington Coast in 2006  and continues to make her clay houses as well as expanding her clay experiences with wheel work,Anagama firing, and terra cotta tile and container scraffito work.
